Networking Activities

Work Packages

The first tasks undertaken by the project will be within the Networking Activities.

WPN1 – Project Management

This work package involves all aspects of management of the project. Coordination of the Dissemination activities within the project will also form an important part of the work package.

WPN2 – Community Interactions

For all the domains that constitute heliophysics, we need to involve the community in discussions to identify which capabilities should be included in the HELIO infrastructure; part of the task will be to prioritize these lists.
  • Which event lists, indices and other types of search metadata should be integrated into the Metadata Servers.
  • Which data sets should be integrated into the Provider Access Servers.
  • Which processing capabilities should be integrated into the Processing Servers.
As part of the work package, we will also organize Community Coordination Meetings (CCM) and Coordinate Data Analysis Workshops (CDAW):
  • The CCMs will provide a forum for the community to learn about HELIO and provide the project with input and feedback; some of the CCMs will be organized as splinter sessions to large meetings such as the European Geophysical Union.
  • The CDAWs will use the capabilities of HELIO to address science use cases that span the disciplines that constitute heliophysics. We plan to host three CDAWs with the first being held around month 18 of the project.

WPN3 – Strategy and Standards

HELIO will provide integrate access to metadata and data from several domains that are related but have distinct differences in the way they consider and use data. There are issues related to the quality and coherence of some metadata. While semantic-driven approach adopted by HELIO will solve many problems, some will remain.

In collaboration with the data providers and standards organizations, we want to identify ways of improving the contents and and interoperability of the metadata and data and promote their use within the community. Such changes will relate mainly to future datasets – existing data will be accommodated as far as possible.

The improvements must be sympathetic to the needs of related domains, including astrophysics, planetary science and geo-science. As far as possible, they should be compliant with standards develop by the IVOA and similar bodies.

This work will be undertaken in coordination with the IAU Working Group on International Data Access (Div II: Solar and Heliospheric).

WPN4 – Define New Capabilities

In this work package, we will define new capabilities that need to be developed by HELIO in order to realize its objectives:
  • We will gather information on the data models used within the communities of heliophysics so that HELIO can use ontological tools to develop and over-spanning data model to tie the heterogeneous sources of data together.
  • As part of the work package we have determined that many users find the interfaces provided by virtual observatories difficult to use because they do not work in the way the scientist wishes think about the data. We will talk to users to determine how the interfaces could be improved and provide input to the Research Activity WPR3.
